The 30-Second Version
Something fundamental is changing about how people find businesses online. Until recently, “being found online” meant one thing: ranking on Google. That playbook still works — for now.
But in 2026, a different question matters just as much: Can ChatGPT find you? Can Gemini recommend you? Can Perplexity cite you?
This guide covers everything — from what AI visibility means to the exact technical changes you need so AI discovery engines can find and recommend your business.

What Is AI Visibility?
AI visibility is how discoverable and citable your business is to AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. It measures whether these systems can parse your content, understand what you offer, and recommend you.
Unlike Google where you can have low-ranking but still indexed pages, AI visibility is more binary. Either an AI engine can read your site and recommend you, or it can’t. There’s no page 10 of AI search results. There’s just “recommended” and “not mentioned at all.”
For a deeper explanation of the optimisation discipline behind this, read my guide on What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Why AI Visibility Matters Now
AI visibility is different from previous digital marketing shifts for three reasons: the adoption curve is vertical (ChatGPT hit 100M users in 2 months), the behavioural shift is permanent (users who try AI search don’t go back), and businesses optimising now will dominate for years (only 16% currently track their AI visibility).
The $750 billion figure isn’t speculation — it’s projected revenue flowing through AI discovery by 2028. For a local plumber, that might mean $40,000/year in revenue decided entirely by whether AI recommends them vs a competitor.
The question isn’t whether AI search matters. The question is whether you’ll be visible when it does.
AI Search vs Traditional Google Search
The critical insight: sites ranking #1 on Google can be completely invisible to AI. I’ve scanned sites with position-1 rankings that have AI Readability Scores below 30/100. Google SEO and AI visibility require different optimisations.
The 5 Pillars of AI Visibility
Everything affecting your AI visibility falls into one of five categories:
Pillar 1: Crawler Access
Your robots.txt must explicitly allow GPTBot, Claude-Web, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. Many sites accidentally block these. If AI can’t crawl your site, nothing else matters.
Pillar 2: Structured Data
JSON-LD schema markup tells AI engines what your page is about. Essential schemas: LocalBusiness, Organization, Service, Product, FAQPage, Article, Review, HowTo, BreadcrumbList. Most business websites have zero schema — adding it is the single highest-ROI change.
Pillar 3: Semantic Content
Write content AI can parse: clear question-answering headings, direct factual statements, lists and tables for data, consistent entity references, and comprehensive topical coverage.
Pillar 4: Authority Signals
AI engines evaluate source authority: domain age, external citations, brand mentions on Reddit/LinkedIn/forums, review aggregation across Google/Yelp/Trustpilot, and E-E-A-T signals.
Pillar 5: Citation Footprint
Being mentioned across multiple independent sources (directories, publications, Wikipedia, review sites) builds citation footprint that AI engines use for cross-validation and trust.

The 90-Day AI Visibility Action Plan
Days 1–7: Audit your baseline (run the free CLEO scan). Fix robots.txt to allow AI crawlers.
Days 8–21: Implement core structured data — LocalBusiness/Organization schema on homepage, Service schema on service pages, BreadcrumbList throughout.
Days 22–30: Add comprehensive FAQ sections with FAQPage schema. This single change dramatically improves AI visibility within weeks.
Days 31–45: Restructure key content pages with question-answer headings, direct factual statements, and data-rich content.
Days 46–60: Build authority signals — claim directory listings, request reviews on multiple platforms, add author bios with credentials.
Days 61–75: Expand citation footprint — guest posts, HARO responses, Reddit engagement, industry directory listings.
Days 76–90: Re-measure. Compare AI Readability and GEO Scores against baseline. Plan next 90 days based on data.
